Michael Stone
Michael has more than six decades of experience in the building and remodeling industry. Starting as a “gopher” in his father’s construction company in the early 50’s, Michael wired his first home in 1957 and installed his first forced air heating system in 1959. He carried a plumbing license for 14 years and worked in a variety of other building trades. Michael has taken more than 3,700 remodeling sales calls and sold or worked on over 1,500 homes and commercial buildings. He was the National Association of Home Builders National Remodeler of the Month in February, 1983. He’s a graduate of Eastern Oregon University, with a degree in Business & Construction Management and Computer Science.
Michael has taught business management, sales and/or estimating classes in 44 states to over 26,000 contractors. He has written articles for and/or has been featured in over 20 national magazines and trade publications and has been a featured speaker for over 20 state and national associations. He’s also the author of three books:
- Markup and Profit; A Contractor’s Guide Revisited focuses on the subject of overhead and profit margins for the residential and light commercial construction industry. This best-selling business management book is considered an industry standard and is used by construction associations and educational providers in many states to teach the fundamentals of overhead and profit margins, and business management to general and specialty contractors of all types.
- His 30+ years of experience in residential remodeling and specialty sales is shared in his book, Profitable Sales, A Contractor’s Guide. Primarily for residential construction sales, Michael addresses how to prepare for a sales call, how to conduct a sales call, how to be a salesperson and how to employ a salesperson.
- Estimating Construction Profitably, outlines how to estimate construction projects more efficiently and accurately. Focused on residential remodeling, his expertise has helped many contractors become better estimators.

Devon Stone
Devon Stone is co-founder and President of Construction Programs and Results, Inc. She has an MBA in Business Administration from the University of Portland and spent 16 years with a major Portland corporation in business management, finance and accounting.
Devon’s father was involved in the construction industry, and she held an apprentice electrician card as a teenager. She has worked on many projects, both construction and business. She manages the office, processes orders, and also serves as Michael’s editor.
